Rome, February 21, 2025 – Dr. Paola Vesco, Deputy Director of the Violence & Impacts Early-Warning System (VIEWS) and Senior Researcher at PRIO and Uppsala University, delivered a compelling keynote address at the XIII Annual Conference of the Italian Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (IAERE) at Roma Tre University.

Titled “Navigating Uncertainty: Climate Variability, Armed Conflict, and Predicting Vulnerable Futures”, Dr. Vesco’s presentation highlighted the intricate linkages between climate extremes and armed conflict. Drawing on cutting-edge research, she emphasized the role of predictive modeling in conflict mitigation and humanitarian response, showcasing insights from the VIEWS early-warning system.

Dr. Vesco’s keynote underscored the urgency of anticipatory action, pointing to recent crises such as the 2023 Libya floods and ongoing conflict in Gaza. She also explored the transformative potential of AI in forecasting conflict risks, advocating for data-driven strategies to mitigate humanitarian crises.
