Gothenburg, Sweden – At the DEMSCORE conference hosted by the University of Gothenburg on 9–10 June 2025, Angelica Lindqvist-McGowan, Operations & Outreach Manager for VIEWS, presented the system’s methodology for forecasting political violence. Her presentation was part of the workshop Data Collection and Processing: Sharing Methods, Expertise, and Opportunities.
The session brought together data managers from DEMSCORE’s partner modules to exchange tools, techniques, and experiences. It offered valuable insight into how different research teams collect, manage, and apply data in the study of democracy, conflict, and political development.
Lindqvist-McGowan introduced the VIEWS forecasting system and its machine learning approach to generating monthly forecasts of state-based armed conflict at both national and subnational levels. She outlined the system’s forecasting architecture, operational procedures, and ongoing efforts to make VIEWS data accessible to policymakers and researchers.
With an emphasis on methodological transparency and collaborative development, the workshop created a productive space for researchers and students to engage directly with the tools and teams behind DEMSCORE’s data infrastructure. VIEWS’ participation underscored its role in advancing open, empirically grounded approaches to conflict forecasting.
